Something Deeper

Kofi and Kya.

While driving out of town to a bridal party fitting, I thought of these two characters. All I could envision was writing a feel-good love story for them. The first chapter was written out in my head before I even made it to my destination

And Something Deeper was created.

Instead of an insta-love story, I went with the friends to lovers trope. It was the best way to tell their story because they needed history. The love the two shared extended past romantic. Kofi and Kya genuinely cared about one another, which is rare, and that’s why Kofi and Kya’s story is so unique.

Kya didn’t have that kind of love in her family dynamic. Kofi being her only source of unconditional love made their story special. He gave her more than romance; he gave her a family. It was also crucial for Kya to have multiple internal struggles derived from dealing with the pressures of society, her parents, and a man who had promised always to choose her.

The main theme of Something Deeper highlights finding happiness instead of following societal rules that dictate what the ideal life and person are supposed to be.

A lot of my personal ideologies were poured into Something Deeper, which is why it’s one of the books that recommend readers read to learn what the Ivy Laika brand is all about:

Healing, Black Love, and Growth.
